The Supreme Court has allowed major provisions of President Trump’s travel ban. This is a miscarriage of justice and siding with extreme and discriminatory policies. The current ruling is antithetical to the American identity.
The Travel Ban Ruling
First of all, the court has granted President Trump the power to discriminate against predominately Arab Muslims. Also, members of the court have refused all compromise and are intent on making discrimination an executive power. Finally, this travel ban affects a community that the President has constantly demeaned and degraded.
The Need for Solidarity
All refugees have the natural right to live and have a home somewhere safe and secure. Also, the United States has an obligation to aid those in need with her considerably resources and generosity. Furthermore, it is more in keeping with the American spirit to respond to refugees with the words of Emma Lazarus.
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
Therefore, we as Americans should offer our Solidarity to those fleeing oppression and death. While we must keep our own people safe, we must respond to this crisis with the open arms of Columbia, not the travel bans of bigotry and fear.
Solidarity Against the Travel Ban
Therefore, the American Solidarity of Virginia condemns this ruling and stands with the refugee population of the Commonwealth in solidarity, offering assistance and friendship. Though it seems like the intolerance of the Trump Administration has prevailed, a renewed commitment to American ideals and solidarity in our communities can overcome these injustices.
